Marshman makes a winning debut

Sunday: Ayr

Karl Burke seems to have a fine crop of juveniles this term and sent out another in Marshman, who was too good for his rivals in the 6f maiden.

The newcomer was ridden by Clifford Lee, who also did the steering on the yard’s Negwah, successful in the 7f maiden for fillies.

Burke won the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot with the exciting Dramatised and Lee was not prepared to put Marshman in that category, but rates him as a colt with plenty of potential.

“That was a good day’s work – two winners,” he said.

“Marshman will be okay. He’s got a lot of growing up to do mentally, but he gave me a nice feel despite being green. He’s done it nicely in the end and I think he’ll end up getting another furlong.”

Lee’s brace took him to 39 for 2022 and he is eyeing a new personal-best after riding 59 winners last year.

A key part of Burke’s North Yorkshire operation, he added: “Compared to last year, I’m up on winners and we have half the year to go. I should be able to better it if I keep rolling as I am.

“I’ll try to get as many winners as I can and just try to get on as many good horses as I can. Karl is the right stable to be involved with; he’s a great trainer and I love the way he trains his horses, while we get on well.”
