Cameron Smith is firmly in the hunt to win on his LIV Golf debut, sitting just one shot off the lead with three holes left to play in Boston.

The winner of the event pockets $AUD5.9 million.

Fellow new recruit Joaquin Niemann led the event at 14-under with seven holes to play, one shot ahead of Talor Gooch, Dustin Johnson and Lee Westwood, and two ahead of Smith and Anirban Lahiri, before the deck started to shuffle.

It started when Smith was scrambling for pat at the 14th hole, only for him to brilliantly chip in for birdie to move to within just one shot.

Movement among the group of six players continued from there with Johnson getting to 14-under, before Niemann missed a simple five-foot putt that would have seen him retain his one-shot lead.

Johnson didn’t take his foot off the gas from there, making another birdie to go clear at 15-under. Smith kept the pace, answering with a downhill birdie putt to go to 14-under with five holes to play.

A bogey at the 14th saw Niemann suddenly drop two shots off the lead, putting Smith into second with Westwood with three to play.

Smith has been one of the big movers in the final round, firing five birdies and an eagle in his bogey-free final round to close in on the win.

He’s making his LIV Golf debut having signed on for a reported fee of $A140 million.
