PlayStation wants to make new emulators – hopefully includes PS3

All good things...

With any luck, Sony’s plans to build new emulators for its retro games means you won’t need to cloud stream old PS3 titles on PS5.

One of the big selling points of PlayStation Plus’ new Premium tier is access to a library of retro games from previous PlayStation consoles.

There are already several fan favourite PlayStation 1 and 2 games available and, while its an admittedly small line-up, the library is bound to improve as more games are added to it.

The downside is that PlayStation 3 games can only be played via cloud streaming, since the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 aren’t able to properly emulate them. However, there may be signs that Sony plans to rectify this in the future.

A newly posted job listing for a software development engineer at Sony states that the chosen candidate will work on ‘the Tools and Technology team at PlayStation Studios to support the newly relaunched ‘Classics’ for PS4 and PS5.’

The listing also mentions adding new features and, most notably, developing new emulators. It stands to reason that that last one is in reference to PlayStation 3 games since games from all the other retro consoles are already emulated on PlayStation 4 and 5.

You can view the listing for yourself here, but this also comes only a day after a new PlayStation 3 related patent was discovered.

The patent includes plans to emulate old PlayStation accessories and peripherals, primarily those for the PlayStation 3, including the EyeToy and PlayStation Move controller.

It doesn’t necessarily guarantee that Sony will go through with these plans, but it shows that Sony is seriously considering improving its PlayStation 3 support.

Aside from its PlayStation 1 and 2 library being shockingly slim at launch (with even fewer PlayStation Portable games), most of the PlayStation 1 games are the inferior PAL versions.

Fortunately, Sony has already shared plans to release NTSC options for the majority of its PlayStation 1 games, so even UK residents can experience them at the proper 60Hz. However, it’s still yet to say when these options will become available.
