Race Face’s new Turbine crankset sheds 20g over its predecessor

The new Race Face Turbine mountain bike crankset shaves 20g off its predecessor, narrows the Q factor and gets an aesthetic refresh.

Race Face has also switched the bolt used to cinch the preload collar to a 3mm hex head.

The previous-generation cranks used a 2mm hex head bolt, which was very easy to round. The collar itself has also been updated to improve ergonomics.

The Q factor has been narrowed “to match the feel of modern cranks, based on rider and athlete feedback”, according to Race Face. On a 136mm spindle, Race Face says the Q factor is 176mm.

The crankset retains the brand’s CINCH system. This enables you to quickly switch out the chainring using a lockring tool. Compatible tools include Park Tool’s BBT-22 and BBT-32, or you can use Race Face’s own CINCH lockring tool.

The crankset is forged from 7000-series aluminium “for maximum strength” and is then machined “to shave every unnecessary gram of weight”.

The Turbine is available in 165, 170 and 175mm crank lengths, with each variant said to have optimised pedal ends to reduce pedal strikes or, as Race Face playfully dubs it, “trail feature contact”.

Any extra material is machined away to reduce weight.

The crankset is designed around a 30mm spindle, which means it will work with the vast majority of frames and a range of bottom bracket standards.

A 32t chainring with a 170mm crank length is claimed to weigh in at 595g.

The crankset retails for £199 / €229 / $179.99 / AU$399 and is available immediately.
