Microsoft has issued an official value minimize for the Xbox Series S, that slashes the already generous price by £50, but it won’t last long.

This year’s Black Friday didn’t have much in the way of video game bargains, given the lack of big name games and the fact that no-one’s going to discount the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 while they’re still low on stock.

The Xbox Series S, though, has been relatively easy to get hold of all year and so it saw discounts as low as £189.99, down from the usual price of £249.99. You wouldn’t usually expect to see a repeat of that until next November and yet Microsoft has slashed £50 off the price until Christmas.

The new price of £199.99 is not just on the Microsoft website but everywhere, with the likes of GAME and Amazon.co.uk both advertising the console for a penny under £200.

Microsoft has made no formal announcement about the price cut, so there’s no clue as to whether this was a spur of the moment decision but if you’re worried about not being able to afford a next gen console this is your big chance.

The Xbox Series S plays exactly the same games as the £450 Xbox Series X, with the only difference being that it has no disc drive, so all games have to be digital, and it usually cannot run games at a native 4K resolution.

Apart from a smaller hard drive (512GB compared to the Xbox Series X’s 1TB) there are no other differences, so it’s always been great value even at full price.

Obviously, it makes a very tempting Christmas gift but now is an especially good time to buy it as Microsoft has implied that its consoles and subscription service will see a price rise relatively soon.

Microsoft has already increased the cost of first party games, to £70, and Xbox boss Phil Spencer has implied that consoles and subscription services will follow, although he made it clear that wouldn’t happen until after this Christmas.
